Have you ever heard of a conserve? Either had I until I was looking through an old canning book and came across a recipe for an Apple conserve that looked pretty delicious. I was at the tail end of canning peaches and still had apples to start on when I saw that recipe and it made me wonder: #1-What is a conserve? And, #2-How would an Apple Peach Conserve taste? And so, I set about trying to find out. As far as the first question goes, this is what the AI definition of a conserve is on Google: "A conserve is a fruit spread or condiment made from a mixture of fruits, sugar, and sometimes nuts or dried fruits. Conserves are similar to jams, but conserves can include other ingredients and can be sweet, savory, or a combination of both. " The recipe that I had first discovered did have golden raisins in it, so I was beginning to see the difference between a conserve and a jam. I decided to try and invent my own conserve with the rest of my peaches and some of the apples that were waiting for me. I talked to Maddy about it and got her opinion as to whether raisins or dried cranberries should be a part of my Apple Peach Conserve. She didn't think so, so I didn't put them in. (But I secretly think the cranberries would have been really good in it, LOL.) I only made a small batch, just in case I didn't like it. But, as you may have gathered since I am blogging about it, this conserve came out terrific! This conserve tastes like fall. Besides the fruits, it is spiced with cinnamon and allspice! I think the next time I make it, I will amp up the spices a bit because in this batch they are fairly subtle. The fruits are cut into bite-sized pieces and the surrounding part is a jellied, so I would say that a conserve is like a jelly with fruit and maybe nuts, dried fruits or other ingredients floating in it. (That is my definitive answer to question #1!) The definitive answer to question #2 is YES! I can make a conserve and it makes me excited because not only is it good on toast or biscuits, it is delicious on other things like oatmeal or waffles. I haven't tried it on waffles yet, but I can just imagine those bits of fruit caught in the squares of the waffle and the jelly part melting all over because of the warmth and the first bite being unbelievably flavorful and warm! And, while I haven't yet tried it on waffles, I have tried it on oatmeal and it was delightful! Here is the recipe for Apple Peach Conserve, click on it to print it. Feel free to add more spices and even the dried cranberries if you would like! Then, read on below and I am sharing free printable canning labels with you because I made a bunch to label all of the peaches I have canned! I hope you enjoy them! I used 2" labels from Avery to print these labels. You can find them on Amazon if you click on the link. If you missed my other peach canning recipes, here is a list of links:
