Have you ever had odds and ends of fruit and fruit products in your fridge and wanted to do something, but didn't quite know what to do? Have you ever watched one of those cooking shows on TV , like Chopped, and they give the chefs a bunch of odd ingredients and you wonder what you would do with them? My kids will tell you that my answer to these questions is always, "Bake a pie!" Today, I'm going to show you an example of that way of thinking with this Fruit Jumble Pie. This week, in my fridge I had a pint of freshly canned peach pie filling that hadn't sealed, so I needed to use it right away. I had some leftover raspberry sauce from a cake filling and some fresh raspberries that were getting close to turning the wrong way and some giant blueberries that I'd picked up on sale. Especially given the fact that these were all fruits, I decided to make a pie and call it fruit jumble pie. It was so simple to throw together, my family will love it and none of my odds and ends of fruits were wasted. When you make a pie filling, there is something about blending all of those flavors together that just makes it work! So, putting all of those separate ingredients together can be a beautiful thing.
My point is, if it sounds good to you, it probably will be good in a pie and you can be brave enough to try it! Both savory pies and dessert pies are great ways to use up odds and ends. We are getting close to the pie baking time of year, so now is a great time to be brave! Right now, in our Etsy Shop, we have two e-books that we are currently updating and adding to. So, we are offering the original versions for 30% off beginning this Saturday through Halloween! These two books are For the Love of Pie and Jam in 3 Winks. Now is a great time to pick up these original versions while supplies last at a great price! Or, you can wait until the new versions are published, but i wanted to give you a heads up about your options. There are some great recipes in each of them! I've written up a recipe for the Fruit Jumble Pie, but just remember that it is a very flexible recipe. You can use totally different fruits, just use fruit and not pie filling, but remember to thicken in before putting it in your pie shell. Or, make up something that is completely your own! If you do, please tell us about it!
Be sure to click on the recipe for the printable version.
