celebrating groundhog day
When I was a young girls, for some reason, Groundhog day was always a fun day.  Probably because everyone had a guess about whether of not the groundhog would see his shadow and because at school there were always little activities surrounding the day.
Of course, Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell took Groundhog Day to a new level in the movie of the same name! The reality is that originally, Groundhog Day had nothing to do with reliving the same day over and over again.  However, watching the movie would be a fun way to culminate a day of celebrating the cute little groundhog and all that he represents!
Read on and find some fun ways to celebrate and to learn all about Groundhog Day!

If you are a homeschooler, a teacher or a parent , there are some ideas that your kids will love and learn from.  First of all, the day lends itself to the study of  The Groundhog  themselves!
*National Geographic Kids has a great lesson and video all about this interesting creature.
*Fun Facts About Groundhogs is available on YouTube!
Additionally, while you are on YouTube, you can find other videos on the same subject.
When you Google groundhogs, they are almost always associated with Groundhog Day, so it is pretty easy to find worksheets and coloring pages surrounding the day itself.

I found this one on Canva!
*Teaching With Jennifer Findlay has writing, math and digital activities for free on her site!
*Teachers Pay Teachers also has a ton of free activities to do with kids!

The idea of the groundhog predicting the weather can take us to other related topics to discuss, such as Weather!
Again, on *Teachers Pay Teachers, her is a specific, free  Groundhog unit about the weather.  And that is just one of the many available.
Here is a *free weather unit from Homeschool 4 Me that looks great!
*Science Buddies shares 17 ideas for Weather Science Projects!

When I think about Groundhogs Day, I can't help but think about shadows!  Shadows would be an awesome topic to talk about on this fun day!
*Look at Study.com for some great lesson and activity ideas about shadows!
*Play around with shadows by making shadow puppets with your hands!  There is a video about it on  *Science Buddies!
One of my favorite childhood poems was in my copy of A Child's Garden of Verses  by Robert Louis Stevenson.  It is entitles, "My Shadow."   I created a printable copy of it if you would like to share it with your children.  Stevenson did such a good job talking about a shadow from a child's point of view.  Your kids may love it as I did.   This poem also lends itself to investigation.  When does the shadow "shoot up taller?"  What is an india-rubber ball? When is the shadow hardly there at all?

Groundhogs Runaway Shadow captures the true spirit of Groundhog Day!

The Night Before Groundhog Day has sweet illustrations and is all about celebrating in fun ways.

Celebrating Groundhog Day gives facts and history about the day and also includes activities and snack ideas!
Of course, we can't have a celebration without food!  So, while I was thinking about shadows, my mind went to the Black and White Cookie!  What a great representation of a shadow!  If you are from the East Coast, you've probably experienced this great cookie many times.  I had one for the first time in Boston!  I don't know if my recipe is as good as those were, but my husband has given them a big thumbs up.
I used vanilla icing and a chocolate ganache.
The cookies come out of the oven a little puffy! Just slightly crispy around the edges.
I spread on the ganache first for the "black" side of the cookie. Then I put them in the fridge to set up a bit before putting on the vanilla side.
The icing will drip a bit, but when you serve it, these cookies look and taste great!
I used my homemade vanilla in glycerin because it is clear and won't change the color of the white icing.  The recipes for the icing and the ganache are included on the recipe card.  As usual, click on the recipe card for the printable version!
