Probably because everyone had a guess about whether of not the groundhog would see his shadow and because at school there were always little activities surrounding the day. Of course, Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell took Groundhog Day to a new level in the movie of the same name! The reality is that originally, Groundhog Day had nothing to do with reliving the same day over and over again. However, watching the movie would be a fun way to culminate a day of celebrating the cute little groundhog and all that he represents! Read on and find some fun ways to celebrate and to learn all about Groundhog Day! If you are a homeschooler, a teacher or a parent , there are some ideas that your kids will love and learn from. I created a printable copy of it if you would like to share it with your children. Stevenson did such a good job talking about a shadow from a child's point of view. Your kids may love it as I did. This poem also lends itself to investigation. When does the shadow "shoot up taller?" What is an india-rubber ball? When is the shadow hardly there at all? Read Books and Poetry about Shadows and Groundhogs!
Of course, we can't have a celebration without food! So, while I was thinking about shadows, my mind went to the Black and White Cookie! What a great representation of a shadow! If you are from the East Coast, you've probably experienced this great cookie many times. I had one for the first time in Boston! I don't know if my recipe is as good as those were, but my husband has given them a big thumbs up. I used vanilla icing and a chocolate ganache. I used my homemade vanilla in glycerin because it is clear and won't change the color of the white icing. The recipes for the icing and the ganache are included on the recipe card. As usual, click on the recipe card for the printable version! How do you celebrate Groundhog Day? Drop a note in the comments, we'd love to hear! Hope you enjoy making memories on even the simplest of days! PS: Just in case you are interested, February 2nd is also Play Your Ukulele Day! Another reason to celebrate! Some Related Past Posts:
