How to kiss a sweatshirt!

     Jayda brought me a new idea that we had to try!  She had seen these kiss decorated hoodies all over the internet and I thought they were a super cute idea!  We had very different ideas about how the process should happen, so we each did it our own way.  Click Read More and I'll explain how we each decorated our own kissy lips sweatshirts! 

     First of all, lets talk hoodies!  Jayda wanted black, I wanted white and we went and checked out the hoodies at Hobby Lobby!  Lucky for us, they had them on sale, plus some on clearance!  Jayda wanted a pullover hoodie, which was not on clearance, but was still only about $15, which I thought was pretty good for a hoodie!  I found a white zip-up one for myself.  (I like zip-up because I don't like to mess up my hair pulling them over my head!)  The zip-up ones were on clearance for under $7!  Then, we found a cute pink one for my little baby granddaughter for under $5!  I had to get that one, too, although I haven't put kisses on it yet. 

    If you don't live near a Hobby Lobby or yours doesn't have them on sale or clearance, you can find some pretty good prices on Amazon. 
      We came home and washed them before we did anything else.  
       We also gathered some other supplies:

• a lip stamp (see it in the picture above) Here is a link to a similar one.
• red acrylic fabric paint (also in the picture above) Similar here.
• lipstick in red or pink tones of your choice.
• clear acrylic spray​
• Stencil plastic
• Exacto knife
• Foam Stencil Brushes
  

Okay, now it was time to decorate our shirts, and this is where our paths diverged.  
First, we tried using the lip stamp, but it didn't work well.  It left a red blob on fabric that looked nothing like lips.  We dipped it in paint, we brushed the paint on it, we wiped it off a bit, but the results were never good.  It's a good thing we were testing it on something other than our shirts!  
Next, Jayda wanted to paint her lips with the paint and simply kiss the shirt.  I thought that was a terrible idea!  I didn't want her to get paint in her mouth!  Besides that, how long would it take to reapply the paint each time?  When you look on line, some people actually do use the paint on their lips.  Even if it says non-toxic, I think that is just crazy! So, I convinced her to use actual lipstick and then we would try to set it with acrylic spray.   
     She began by preparing her hoodie with a white painted background because she was going to put her lips in the shape of a Magic 8 Ball!  I brought here my red lipsticks and let her choose which she wanted to use and she started kissing away!  Sometimes she would kiss her shirt 2 or 3 times before reapplying, thus giving her design depth and interest.  It came out really cute! 

After she had finished and the lipstick had time to dry a bit, she took it outside and sprayed it with acrylic spray.  Some directions say to heat set the lipstick with an iron, but we tried this method.  We haven't washed it yet, so we shall see how it works. 

     Jayda also made a little front design on the shirt as well.  

     I didn't want to have to kiss my sweatshirt over and over, so I decided to try a different method on mine!  
      Using a piece of cardboard, I gave it a few kisses with lipstick on and chose the lips I liked the best.  Then, I slipped the lips under a piece of stencil plastic and traced them onto the plastic.  I cut the solid spots out with an Exacto knife.  I used the stencil, paint and foam brush to stencil lips onto my hoodie.  I put some inside the hood and wherever I felt like it on the outside as well. 

     My method was a little more difficult to keep from smearing, and I had to be careful where I set the stencil each time I wanted to add lips.  Also, the paint soaked through in some spots, so to avoid red blotches on the outside of the shirt, I put lip stencils in those places as well.  When all was said and done, it came out really cute!

      All in all, this was a pretty fun project, and if you can find the sweatshirts at a good price, it would be a fun party activity for teens or older!   Jayda and I had fun doing it!  It was a great G-ma & G-daughter project!
