I've been in the mood for some fabric crafting and sewing.  Plus, I've been doing some bread baking.  I often give loafs of bread away when I make an abundance and that made me think of this post when I showed you how to make a bread cozy to use when gifting bread.  But, I had just had a conversation with a friend about how many people there are out there that do not know how to sew! I thought it might be fun to come up with a no-sew version of the bread cozy.  So, I did and I'm really happy with the way it turned out!
This project is a perfect way to use some of those adorable fat quarters that you have sitting in your fabric stash!  I made some mini-cozies for mini loaves and was able to get 6 of them out of one fat quarter! I think these mini loaves would be perfect little gifts at a luncheon in the table setting, or as favors for a shower or other party.  You can get the mini loaf pan here.

After the loaf is all gone, the cozy will still be useful as a basket on a dresser or desk, or the person could regift it to someone else.

These cozies can be made for any size of loaf.  Here is one on bread from my 9" x 5" loaf pan.  Isn't this a cute way to gift a loaf of bread, rather than plastic wrap or foil.  A cute tea towel could be cute, but this idea is pretty unique, don't you think?

When the bread is all gone, this cozy will be a great way to serve up some dinner rolls.  And, it will store very easily.

Of course, there are a myriad of other uses as well, from sewing notions to office supplies.

Whether you sew or not, this is a quick little project to whip up! I've prepared a tutorial to teach you how to do it.
Here is the supply list for a 9" x 5" Bread Cozy:
  • 2 coordinating fabrics, cut into 12" x 14" pieces
  • Wonder Under or other fusible webbing like it
  • Iron
  • A  self healing rotary mat
  • Pinking Rotary Cutter
  • Scissors, sewing and paper
  • A bit of coordination ribbon
  • needle and thread
  • or glue, fabric or E-6000
I chose a couple of coordinating fabrics from my stash. Of course, you may also use the same fabric inside and out of the basket. I decided to put the polka-dot on the inside of my cozy.
I cut the fabric slightly larger that 12 x 14 inches to allow room for trimming and I also cut out the fusible web in the same dimensions. Using an iron, fuse the web to the wrong side of one of your fabric rectangles.
Allow the paper to cool for a second and then peel back the paper. The shiny adhesive should have stuck to the fabric. Discard the paper.
Now, lay the other fabric piece wrong side down over the adhesive. This means the fabric is wrong sides together. Use the iron to heat the two pieces of fabric together.
Now that the fabric has bonded together, you can decide which side will be the inside and which side will be the outside of the cozy.
Use the rotary mat and rotary cutter with a pinking blade to trim all of the way around the rectangle. (Be careful with that cutter!)
Now your fabric will have pinked edges all around. It looks so cute!
I like to go over the edges with the iron one more time and make sure that everything is well stuck together.
You can always use your pan to help make sure that the sizes are going to fit correctly. I used mine and figured out that I would fold up and iron the crease 3 inches from each side and end.
Open up your fabric and you will see a square in each corner. this square will help you know where to form the points that will bring up the sides. The arrows are pointing at the bottom corner in the middle and the two sides which will be brought to meet together.
In this picture I am holding the creases together and folding up the sides at the same time. Place a pin to hold it in place. Next use the needle and thread to whip stitch the 4 corners together, thus forming the sides of the cozy.
When the corners are stitched, your coy basket will look like this.
Tie a bow for one corner of the basket and stitch or glue it on. (I always choose stitching, but you do it the way that works for you.)
And here is how sweet it looks filed with a warm loaf of bread!
Now you can go crazy and make a bunch of little loaf cozies as well!
If you absolutely feel like you can't even sew a stitch, you could always use a strong fabric glue to put the basket together.  Glue it and hold it in place with pins or clothes pins until it is dry, and then glue on the bow.
By the way, that bread in the cozy is a new recipe that I will share with you soon!  It will be a perfect fall flavor! Watch for it!
