Have you heard about the health benefits of kefir? I was introduced to it recently and to me, the benefits have been noticeable right away! What is Kefir? Let me step back a minute in case you are like I was and have no knowledge about what kefir is. Kefir has been around for a couple of centuries and has been prepared and served as a beverage throughout history. It is said to have originated between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Kefir grains are not actually grains. They are a combination of healthy bacteria cultures and yeast. When fermented in water or milk, Kefir is said to have many health benefits. I searched the web and found some info that I am sharing with you here, along with a couple of websites: Kefir can be fermented in either milk or water. I use the water variety, which is great for people who are vegan or lactose intolerant. When you get your own kefir to ferment, there should be directions telling you how to do it. Basically it takes a little cane, unprocessed sugar and clean, spring water and some molasses the first time you start the fermenting process. After that, you simplydrain the water off to use it, feed it with a little more sugar and cover it with water again. It takes about 3 or 4 days to be ready to use. Here are some sources to get started with Kefir.
I am not an expert by any means on this kefir subject, I am learning as I go. To be honest, I was nervous about trying kefir. I hate to drink medicine type things and I wondered if this would taste bad. My son just drinks it straight. His girlfriend told me that she mixes it in her morning juice or smoothie. So, I took the plunge and tried my own invention! I really like it a lot, and as I said before, I've noticed benefits right away! I have a product from Doterra called MetaPWR Advantage. I really wanted to use it, but that whole not liking to drink certain medicinal things kicked in for me and I wasn't using it. As I said, I want to use it because it contains things like NMN which is shown to be able to suppress age-associated weight gain, enhance energy metabolism and physical activity, improve insulin sensitivity, improve eye function, improve mitochondrial metabolism and prevent age-linked changes in gene expression. (Check out this source). For more info on Doterra's MetaPWR, go to this link. Anyway, I decided to combine my MetaPWR with my kefir and add some frozen fruit juice to make it into a slushie as part of my morning routine. It doesn't matter what juice you use, I had some Welch's 100% juice pops that no one was drinking and I put about 3 of those in my slushie. There is passion fruit, berry mix and grape. They are all great and they add the slushie-ness to my drink. I just whip it all up in the Magic Bullet and is a super simple way to start the day! I've only been making this morning slushie for about a week now, but here is what I have already noticed about myself:
When I used the MetaPWR by itself, I did notice a bit more energy and some benefits of the collagen. But, the stomach changes now that I've added the kefir are remarkable! I think that this is a good combination! I will keep monitoring myself and let you know how things go as I continue.
In the meantime, here is the recipe for this Breakfast Slushie! Actually, you can drink it anytime of the day. This cold, refreshing slushie is perfect here in the hot weather of Phoenix!
