Did you realize that February 12th is known as Lost Penny Day? Neither did I, but when I heard about it, it brought some things to mind.
Pennies have been around since 1787, and while they don't have much value now, a bunch of them together can add up!
There is a trend out there to do away with cash and change. That makes me kind of sad. What will become of the joy of piggy banks? Pulling coins out of my purse and handing them to my grandkids for their banks is always so much fun for them and for me. What will the Tooth Fairy put under pillows in exchange for lost teeth? How will gumballs come out of a gumball machine? I have many memories associated with pennies and other coins.
So, I'm glad that there is a penny day. And to celebrate it, I have a game that I learned long ago from my friend Elizabeth. It is based on the book, The Hundred Penny Box by Sharon Bell Mathis. It is the story of a little boy whose great-great aunt is 100 years old. She has a box that contains a penny from each year of her life. Although her memory fades in her old age, the memories in the box mean a lot to her and to her young nephew.
Here is how the game goes:
The Penny Game would be great to play for many occasions! Here are my ideas:

Our family was so blessed this Christmas to have all of us together for a little over a week. Lindsey and her family and my son Tyler and his family hosted everyone. It was chaotic, but wonderful.
One of the things we love to do as a family when we get together is play games! Every year, there are new games given as gifts and then we have a ton of fun trying them all out. Here is a list of our favorites this year:
*Azul: This was a gift from Alicia and her husband, who are really good at choosing good games, to my husband and I. Azul is a beautiful game with pieces based on Portuguese tiles. It requires strategy to win and seems a little complicated at first, but once you catch on, you will love it!
*Blokus: Blokus is another addictive strategy game that even the youngest players can catch on to. My 4 year old granddaughter did great at it. (Of course, she is unusually intelligent, if I do say so myself!) Young ones may need a little guidance towards the end of the round when the board becomes more crowded. Unlike Azul, this game seems at first to be quite simple, but you soon find out that you must be strategic about placing those blocks on the board!
*Blockbuster: At first glance, this game looks kind of lame with its plastic VHS case and old Blockbuster Video Store logo. But, we hade more fun with this game as we tested how many movies we could name in certain genres or categories, such as "Movies With Snakes." There are opportunities to give clues to your team using just one word, a catch phrase from the movie or to act it out. Blockbuster is a great party game for a large group of all ages. This game was a gift to Alicia's family from some friends and I am going to miss it until I see them again! Maybe I will have to get my own!
*Chameleon: Another great group game! It is no wonder that this is an award winning game because it is really a lot of fun! In this game, one person is the chameleon who has to pretend to know the secret word in order not to be found out by the rest of the players. If he can really guess the secret word in the end, he can save himself. The trick to being successful in this game is to give good clues that are just vague enough to keep the Chameleon from figuring out the word but not so vague that you sound suspicious. And, if you are the Chameleon, you have to be able to fake out your opponents by blending in.
If you have a party coming up or any kind of gathering where games are in order, these games are for you!

Every year during the holidays, new games are added to our family's collection. We love playing games together when we gather for the holidays and we are always on the lookout for something we haven't played before, or an old classic that we haven't played in awhile.
Games make great Christmas gifts and you can find good ones for all of the ages in your family. When everyone is together, they are a great way to spend time enjoying each other's company. In our family, we have so many great memories of fun game nights when we laughed until we cried.
With Thanksgiving on the horizon and then Christmas right after that, now is a great time to look for some fun family games that you can give as gifts and/or enjoy as a family during your time together. To give you some help, here is a list of past posts with game suggestions:
*Trivia Games-we give you a sample of how WE would answer some of the questions. There are a variety of suggested games on this list.
*Card Games- this is kind of an all encompassing list with any games that rely strongly on cards, like Dominion. *Some Fun Board Games *Scrabble-the game and the crafts! *Two Person Games-for smaller families! *10 Great Party Games-This list is my particular favorite. *Skyjo-this was our favorite this summer and even the youngest kids could play it!
But Wait! That isn't all! There are a few other games that I haven't even told you about yet! You will love them all!
I hope I've given you some new ideas for games that you can enjoy with your family! Please! If you have tried any new games that you think my family will love, drop the titles in the comments for us! We're always "game" for a new game!
Oh! I almost forgot! Here is a free printable game I made you guys for Christmas last year. You can still print it if you haven't done so yet.

Around here, we are always up for a new game! This one, Skyjo, was a gift to me for Mother's Day! Little did we know when we began playing it that my youngest grandchildren would be able to catch on to it so well! Skyjo is a great game for old and young alike! Skyjo is a card game with numbered cards from -2 up to 12. The object of the game is to end up with the fewest points. The lowest cards are shades of blue and green and the highest are yellow up to red. My 3 year old granddaughter learned quickly that blue and green are "good" cards and that yellow and red are "bad" and those are the ones that you want to get out of your hand! After one time of playing "partner" with her mom, she was ready to have her own cards and play independently. She has beat me way more often than I have her! Playing Skyjo takes 2 things. Luck, or in other words, the luck of the draw literally! It also takes a certain amount of strategy and problem solving skills. You have to know what cards to replace when you draw and if it is worth replacing already fairly good cards with even better ones or taking the risk of switching out the unknown. I have been so surprised at how quickly even my youngest grandchildren have begun to figure out some of the more subtle strategies! Educational value of Skyjo: While the competition of the game alone makes it fun, there are so many great skills that kids can take away from it!
During these hot summer months in Phoenix when playing outside isn't really an option unless there is water involved, it is so great to have games to play that we can all enjoy and give the kids a way to play something besides electronics! Cooperative play is so important! Not only that, if they are having fun playing and secretly learning at the same time, that is a terrific bonus! Math skills are something that all kids should have reinforced! Skyjo fits the bill! Are you playing any great games this summer? Let me know what they are! I can always use suggestions!
