I've written you about my youngest son Jacob a few times. I told you when he became an Eagle Scout here and here. I told you about when he was called to be a missionary in Africa, here. It is hard to believe that he has been home from that 2 year mission for 3 years now. He has also been serving in the National Guard during that 3 years, as well as going to school and working another job. But, he was recently sent away on a year long deployment, so we are back to long distance communication. When he was on his mission, it was very expensive to send him care packages and knowing that he had to move around a lot, we couldn't send very many things that he would have to carry around with him. Now that he is deployed, the situation is much the same, but he has even less room in his luggage for unnecessary items. So, everything that we send him needs to be consumable. Jacob recently had a birthday, so I started racking my brain about what I could send him to help him have a happy day and let him know that we are thinking of him. He was happy with what I sent, and I also spoke to him about what his suggestions would be for care packages in the future. I thought that I would share some ideas for those of you who find yourselves in this situation. Also, I am including a free printable of labels with jokes that you can attach to the items you include to lighten their spirits a bit more.

Here at 3 Winks Design, we have published some E-Cookbooks that we are pretty proud of. They are a labor of love as we publish recipes that we have developed or that have been long time family favorites.
Back in August, we introduced and published our Jam in 3 Winks book with a bunch of delicious, tried and true recipes for jams and marmalades. It took us awhile, but we have recently published it in Kindle form on Facebook. Amazon makes it possible and very easy to purchase a Kindle version of books to give as gifts to others. Doing so can be a quick and easy last minute gift during a busy holiday season. But, sometimes you want to be able to give a gift wrapped and under the tree. E-books can fit the bill for that as well! Using our books as examples, here are some ideas for gift printing and giving printed e-books. Or, if you would prefer not to print the e-book, you can always gift it electronically and add the extra items to go with it as you announce your gift

A little over a year ago, I had this idea to do an activity for our women's group at church entitled "Gather." One of the things our church emphasizes is the importance of family and family ties back through our ancestors. We truly know that Families are Forever. Knowing who you are and where you come from is a priceless gift that can give you a sense of comfort and belonging. I find it remarkable to see in today's world how many people do DNA tests to find their relatives, and how many TV shows there are about searching for one's roots. It all attests to me the importance of family being a part of our beings.
For this activity, I found some amazing family trees that are free to have printed from familyhistorydaily.com I encourage you to search this site for a ton of family history ideas from research to family trees to other ways to display your family history. These family trees are free to download and have printed. I sent mine to Staples and had them printed for about $1 a piece! They came out beautifully and make a very inexpensive gift just as is! But, if you want to spruce them up a bit, I have a couple of ideas for you.
We happened to have some left over bead board at our house from a past project. My family tree print is 11 x 17 inches, so I had my good husband cut out a piece for me to make a backer frame for my tree. I decided that if someone is still doing research to find all of the names to fill in on their charts, this type of frame is perfect because it can be displayed and gradually filled in as they do more research.
For this beautiful black and white choice, I also printed it in the 11 x 17 size. I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased the black frame, complete with mat in a 13 x19 size, the mat has an 11 x 17 opening.
Using black alphabet stickers, I stuck the word "Gather" all over the mat in both upper and lower case letters. I love how it came out.
As I mentioned, I came up with this idea a year ago, but then Covid hit our family so the activity was postponed. We finally were able to do it this year! Other parts of the activity included:
The thought just occurred to me that framing an old recipe in my mom's handwriting might be a nice addition to this family tree gift! I'll have to mull this over! In the meantime, I hope there is someone that you know that would love an awesome family tree. It is a heartfelt gift that doesn't break the budget!

Thank you for your support. In September, my husband and I were able to get away from it all and spend some time with old friends at a time share in Park City, UT. It was so much fun! I hadn't spent a lot of time in Park City, except to go snow mobiling with a friend in 1978! Other than that, we had always driven past it and said, "There's Park City! I went snow mobiling there once!" Trust me, the place had changed since the 70s. We spent some time on main street, we rode on the Heber Creeper (a train), and ate at some really good restaurants. We spent a lot of time finding places to park because Park City does not live up to its name in that department. Mostly we played games and talked and caught up with our friends. My friend Kathy, on the left, is quite the seamstress, quilter and other handcrafter! When we entered the time share condo, (my husband and I were the last ones to arrive), she had placed in our room some beautiful handsewn baskets, bags and pouches as little gifts! I was so touched and appreciative! All of the items are perfect for traveling, and I particularly loved the long, sort of boat shaped basket that ties up with ribbon, or unties to lay flat for packing. It was a perfect spot to hold my glasses at night and I have continued to use it for that on my bedside table at home. It is also the perfect size to hold a pen and some post-it notes! I am not above using it for my glasses and a pen and note paper all at once!
