I was introduced to lacto fermentation by my son who decided to make sauerkraut using this method of food preservation. His sauerkraut was the first time I ever liked to eat the stuff and I was amazed! I made exactly one jar of pickles after that. They tasted good but weren't crisp. I made a mental note to learn more about it and to try it again.
That was about 6 years ago. Fast forward to this Christmas when my good friend Rhonda gave me a lacto fermentation kit for Christmas! I was amazed and thrilled and thus my new journey into lacto fermentation has begun.

Years ago I received an Oster Bread machine, and I loved how easy it made it to mix up dough, but I could never get the bread to bake without collapsing. It was very annoying, as kneading bread is my least favorite part of making bread, and I liked how simple a bread machine made it to have fresh baked bread everyday. I mean a fresh loaf with about 5 minutes of work on my part is a dream. Alas I felt it wasn’t meant to be for us, and once I got my KitchenAid, the bread machine sat on a shelf collecting dust. And we went back to buying store bought bread. But I guess I wasn’t exactly ready to give up on my bread machine, because it is one of the things that made the move with us to Georgia. And with the prices of groceries rising everyday, it seemed like a good time to pull it out and give it another go. I mean millions of others use bread machines to make great loaves of bread, I knew I could too. Plus now we’re more in the country and farther from stores so it makes running to the store for bread a big hassle. If I could just make a loaf every night of the next day, it’s less time consuming and more economical!

If you have followed 3 Winks Design very much, you know that Helen loves to can! (That's me!) The best time to can in Phoenix is of course in the winter months when the summer heat is not making you feel like killing anyone who turns on a stove. The problem with canning in winter is knowing where to get the produce to can! Well, I've had some adventures with that this week and lucky for me, I've been able to keep my canners busy! I am on the Relief Society Activity committee at my church. Relief Society is the Women's Organization and we try to have uplifting, self-improvement type activities throughout the year on one weeknight per month (give or take). I am blessed to work with some wonderful women on this committee and it is so much fun to sit and plan these activities together. We peruse the internet for ideas, we pray about what the women in our group may need, we bounce ideas around and get goosebumps when we come up with a really good plan.
I generally share ideas for our activities with you after the fact, such as this Alice in Wonderland themed activity, but since we are getting so close to Valentine's Day, I figured someone out there might need an idea in a pinch, so here is one that I think will be really good. |
