Spooky Book Suggestions
Seasonal books are a good way to encourage reading at any age.  With Halloween on the way, we thought some suggestions for some spooky (and funny spooky) reads would be perfect today!  Here are some great choices with good reviews.  Many are available on Kindle, some are at a special price and they all look like something I would enjoy reading!

Suggestions for ages 9-12:

It is going to be hard for Tom to fit into middle school when he is a Vampire, Werewolf and a Zombie! Written by the writer of SpongeBob, Jimmy Neutron and CatDog, this book is sure to be a hilarious hit with middle graders, especially if they love Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

The Graveyard Book is all about a young boy being raised by ghosts in a graveyard.  The beginning of the book begins with the grizzly murder of the boys family but then becomes less frightening and more intriguing as the boy learns the way of the dead and the living world.
The Graveyard Book has won the Newbery Medal, the Carnegie Medal, the Hugo Award for best novel.  The only novel to have won all 3, so a must read!

Lily goes to spend Halloween at her cousin's pumpkin farm and finds out that it is magical! Sounds like a simple, predictable story, but turns into an exciting adventure and a Halloween that Lily will never forget! 322 pages of spooky adventures by Sarah Shadi that are sure to please.

Primary Grade Books:

In this captivating book, A Spoonful of Frogs, the author Casey Lyall spins a tale about the most important ingredient in a witch's frog soup, (the frogs!) and how difficult they are to catch! The illustrator, Vera Brosgol, have created a hilariously delightful story that the entire family will get a kick out of!

Linda White's story of a girl named Rebecca who hates to eat pumpkins but who inadvertently grows a huge patch of them is a long time classic.  Rebecca learns the good that can be done with these big orange squash, even though she doesn't like them herself!  Too Many Pumpkins has beautiful illustrations and is sure to become a seasonal favorite!

A collection of spooky short stories are great to have for a quick bedtime read or to share around the campfire or at a Halloween party.
This book was just published in August of 2023! So the stories are new and many Halloween type characters are introduced in the them. The stories were crafted to stir imagination and to spur on Halloween fun!

A young boy's Ninja costume for his school play makes him feel brave enough to go after the monster in his bedroom closet!
Written in rhyme,  this book is also available on Audible.  But, the best deal is the hardcover version that is available right now for a limited time at the great price of $4.84 and with Prime delivery!  Super cute book for any kid who is afraid of the monster in their closet!

When the power goes out at their house, two brothers have to discover what is making all of the terrible noises that they are hearing.  The results of their terrifying investigations are hilarious.  This book is a great way to teach onomatopoeia!  Edge of your seat fun for the younger set.

Hopefully, those will get you through the Halloween season!  If not, here are other suggestions from past years:

Thank you for sharing this wonderful list of books for kids to read. It brought back fond memories of taking my daughters to story time at our local library. I remember how excited they were during the weeks leading up to Halloween, listening to the librarians read such cute and spooky books. I appreciate you sharing this at the Crazy Little Love Birds link party #9.
