When I was a young mother, I loved getting handmade gifts like receiving blankets, quilts, and afghans.  They were always so sweet and personal, plus the store blankets never seemed large enough or warm enough.
Lately, there have been a lot of young mothers around me having babies and I decided to make the newest little girl on the way a receiving blanket and matching burp cloth.  Those are two things you can never have enough of!
Let's start with the blanket.  Click on the images for directions.
I measured the fabric into a nice large square. The fabric was 43" wide, so I cut it 43" long.
Fold over the edge about 1/2" all of the way around. Press it with your iron.
At each corner, fold down the point and press.
Now fold over the edge again. At the corners, line it up with the point of the corner like you see in this pictures.
As you fold each side, work with it to get a point and press and pin into place. I work with this corner a little bit more, don't worry.
See the hem all of the way around. I used a zig-zag stitch to mimic the zig-zag of the fabric. Now press the entire blanket and fold it up because you are all finished!
Wasn't that easy?  Next we will make the burp cloth.  Click the photos again.
Cut two 30" long strips of the pink flannel fabric and white flannel 8 inches wide.
Put the fabric right sides together and then stitich all around. Leave one end open. Trim the seam allowance to be about 1/4 inch all around. This picture shows it before trimming. Now flip the whole thing right side out through the open end. Iron in place. Fold in and iron the open end and stitch shut.
After you sew the end shut, continue sewing all around the edge of the burp cloth. You can see the top stitched edge in this photo. Now, at even intervals along the length of the cloth, I followed the zig-zag pattern and stitched it like a quilting stitch to hold the entire piece in place.
You can see the stitching just below.

Now, fold them up, add a bag of diapers and a rattle and you have a sweet baby gift!

That is true that you want a theme to your baby shower. My wife is pregnant with a boy and we want the theme to be construction. Hopefully, we can get some toy trucks.
