Welcome to Edition 3 of Five Friday Faves!
Today's question? What is your favorite love song?
Here is one of my favorite love stories. One year, after Valentine's Day was over, I had fallen in love with a certain song. We hadn't done anything special for Valentine's Day that year, when you have lots of kids, sometimes those days go by unnoticed or with just a little kiss and I love you and that is about all you have time for. But, the song I had fallen in love with was Clint Black's "Something that We Do". I am usually a rock 'n roll girl, but there are some country songs that really speak to me, and this was one of them. I couldn't get enough of it. The message was so perfect for my Hallmark movie heart. I mean those lyrics set to that beautiful music is timeless. "I remember well the day we wed, I see that picture in my head. I still believe those words we said, Forever will ring true." "Love isn't someplace that we fall, it's something that we do."
Well, a couple of days after the holiday, my husband was late getting home and I was beginning to wonder what had happened to him. When he walked in the door, he had gifts for me, chocolate and that Clint Black CD! It was the sweetest, most unexpected thing! I still love that song and I cherish that memory. That gift told me that he was thinking about me even when we were apart. He did something to show me and it fit the message of the song.
This weeks guest choice has Fave #2 and she is my other DIL, Korina! Since her choice is also a country pick, I thought she should be next on the list. Korina has a beautiful singing voice and I have heard her sing a lot of love songs. But, when I asked for her favorite, she went right to Garth Brooks! You have got to admit, he has a beautiful voice for a love song. Korina's favorite is "To Make You Feel My Love". I had to laugh because this song is written by Bob Dylan, who is one of my least favorite singers, although he has written some really good lyrics. "There's nothing that I wouldn't do, go to the ends of the earth for you, make you happy, make your dreams come true, to make you feel my........ love"
Fave #3 this week comes from Madalynn. We totally switch gears when it comes to genre. Her pick comes from the Disney Movie "Tangled". I have to admit that it is one of my faves, too. Mandy Moore does a beautiful job singing, "At Last I See the Light".
"And at last I see the light And it's like the fog has lifted And at last I see the light And it's like the sky is new And it's warm and real and bright And the world has somehow shifted All at once everything looks different Now that I see you." That song reminds you of those feelings of first falling in love!
Fave #4 is Alicia's choice, and it goes to show that certain singers and certain songs are timeless! Alicia chose an Elvis song! "Can't Help Falling In Love" is certainly a song that would make your Valentine swoon if you sang it, played it or danced to it this Valentine's Day. "Take my hand, Take my whole life, too. For I can't help falling in love with you." Yup, we raised her right, you have just got to love Elvis and his dreamy voice.
I saved Lindsey for last because she just got married this past year and her love story is fresh and new. She waited a long time for her Mr. Right (or PH as she calls him) and her song pick is perfect for her story. She chose another Oldie but goodie. Nat King Cole's "When I Fall in Love". She had this song sung at her wedding, beautifully done by my SIL Adrian. (My children and their spouses are all very talented!) She and Austin danced their first dance to it. It was beautiful! "When I give my heart, it will be completely, or I'll never give my heart." Those words describe Lindsey's feelings perfectly.

Over the past couple of weeks I have given directions to the gifts I am making for my grandchildren, this owl purse, and this scrappy snake. It is getting to be time to mail them off, so I started looking around for little treats to fill them with. I found some little cards with stickers at one store, and some conversation hearts at another store, then I went to Dollar Tree and found everything I needed! Why didn't I go there first? Look at all of this stuff!

For those of you with kids in school who are giving classroom Valentines, this is the place to go. Your child will be able to give the most awesome Valentines ever for very little money. For my grandchildren, I went a little overboard, but I did it without breaking the budget! I had so much fun picking out things they will love. There are both candy gifts and non-candy gifts available. Here are a few of my favorites. Each photo will be a link to where you can order each item..
There are also boxes of chocolates for teachers and dear friends. There are animal shaped chocolates, (they even have an owl!) and so many more options. If you need a bunch for classrooms or as PTA gifts, ordering online from Dollar Tree is the way to go!
Dollar Tree also has really cute Valentines and non-candy treats as well!
Both of these sticker sheets have owls on them, so my grandkids will know that they are from me! Also, when you put together a teacher gift, stickers are great things that she will be able to use in her classroom!
These are some of my favoriteValentine's Day cards that they offer! I know my grandchildren will love getting these little animals attached to their cards! They also havecards with stickers, buttons and candy, many with licensed characters.
One other thing that you might consider as a classroom gift is facial tissue, or in other words, Kleenex. This is cold season and let me tell you from experience that classrooms go through a lot of tissues during this time of year and usually start running out of the stash that they had at the beginning of the year. A case from Dollar Tree would really be appreciated!
I could go on and on about my finds at Dollar Tree! These are just a few of them. Shopping for everything was a lot of fun, but the real fun started when I began to put the gifts together! Here is how they came out!
Have you found some favorite deals at the Dollar Tree? Be sure to share them with us!
Remember if you do order online, you can ship to your local Dollar Tree Store for free to pick up!
About a week ago, I made a little owl purse as a Valentine's Day gift for my granddaughters. Today I am going to show you what I came up with for my grandsons! I put together a picture tutorial for a Scrappy Snake using some sporty fabric and adding a pocket at the neck to be used to tuck in treats or for little fingers to fit in to make their snake slither!
This snake is really pretty simple to make. I have broken it down into sections to help you see how I did it. But, although it will seem like a lot because of all of the pictures, it really goes together pretty quickly.
Supplies:
Preparing the snake skin:
The largest piece of fabric you will need is a long strip to be the under belly of the snake. I had some long left over scraps from another project which were actually the inspiration for this snake project. These strips became the under belly of the snake.
Of course, one of the most fun things about this project is picking out the fabric to use. When you have picked them out, cut out sections that are about 3 x 6 inches and line them up in a pleasing way. Here is a gallery of what I did. Click on the pictures for directions.
From this size of a scrap panel, you should be able to make 2 snake bodies. You need to make the scrap panel as long as your under belly. Then, here is what you do next.
The Head of the Snake:
Now you need to give your snake a head. Read on to see how I did it.
Adding the Tongue:
Because this snake is a Valentine's Day gift, I decided to give him a heart tongue instead of a forked tongue. I simply used a piece of felt and folded it in half length-wise and cut a heart at the end. Then I opened it up and finished cutting the narrow tongue strip. I made sure it was long enough to stick out of the mouth. Check out the gallery for this:
Adding the Eyes:
There are many ways to add eyes. Depending on the age of the children receiving these snakes, you want to make sure the eyes are safe. Buttons can be a choking hazard. If you feel like your children are old enough to not eat the buttons, still attach them very securely. For my youngest grandson, I am going to stitch on felt eyes very securely because I think that will be safer for him. For my older grandchildren, I looked through my button box to find something interesting for the eyes. Here is how I attached them.
Adding the Head to the Body:
You are getting close to being finished! Attaching the head to the body is really quick and then you will be ready to stuff this guy!
And Voila! You have a super cute snake! Just think, if you can make two snakes (or more if you make the panel wider) you can save a bunch of time on your next one. Also, I was a little worried when I first put my panel together that it was going to look terrible. But, once it was finished, I was really pleased with the look. Each snake has different eyes that I found in my button box.
The funny thing is, I am terribly afraid of real snakes, but I really like these guys!
Now, I am off to the Dollar Tree to get some things to tuck in the mouths and pockets to really turn them into Valentines! I'll show you some pictures of that later. Come back tomorrow for the first edition of Renny's Recipes! You will love it! |
