Whenever my almost 13 year old granddaughter comes to see me, she loves to share new trending craft ideas with me.  This past weekend was no exception.  I hadn't heard of these eye color bracelets that she found on social media, but they are such a fun idea.
The idea behind eye color bracelets is that you make two bracelets, one for you and one for a friend or a loved one.  You match beads to each person's eye color and then create bracelets with those colors intermingled.  I think that is a sweet symbol of being a part of one another's lives.
Jayda decided that since Father's Day is coming, she wanted to make bracelets for her dad and herself.   Jayda has hazel eyes with very pronounced patches of green and brown,  The photo doesn't do her beautiful eyes justice.  Her dad's eyes are a blue/green blend.  We found our beads at Michael's.  We used photos of their eyes to hold the beads up to as we tried to match them.  There was a sale the day we shopped, which was lucky.

But here is a set of semi-precious stone beads from Amazon that contains almost every eye color imaginable.  These are great as well and a little better price.  Just remember that you need enough beads to make two bracelets!

Supplies we used:
  • Stretchy Elastic Beading Cord.  We used this brand:

  • Collapsible Eye Beading Needles.

  • A glue gun and glue
  • beads
  • scissors

Instructions:
  • Begin by measuring the wrist of the person who will be wearing the bracelet.  Cut that length of cord, adding 4 or 5 inches to the stretchy cord for tying off at the end.  Tie a bead at one end of the  cord length to prevent the beads from slipping off as you thread them on.  You can see in the picture below how I simply tied the cord by putting it through the bead and then tying around the bead itself.  I wanted to be able to untie it at the end of the threading process to that I could tie the bracelet together, so I didn't make it too difficult to untie later.

  • We poured the different eye color beads into separate bowls to make it easier to tell whose eye color each of the beads went with.  This would facilitate making and nice pattern of the colors.

  • Before beginning to string on the beads, Jayda laid out the pattern that she wanted, alternating the bead color.  You can do any pattern you would like.  She added some smaller bead separators on her dad's bracelet.

  • The collapsible needles made it very easy to thread the stretchy cord through the needle.  We just did  a single strand of cord because the holes in the beads were small.  The collapsible needle pulled right through! This is a very quick project to complete when you have the correct tools!
  • Continue threading on beads until there are enough beads on the bracelet to lay nicely all around the wrist .
  • Untie the beginning bead from the cord carefully.   Pull the two ends together adjusting  the bracelet to a desirable length.  Not too tight!  Tie the ends with a square knot and repeat it 3 or 4 times on top of each other.  Then, cover the knot with a bit of glue from a glue gun to hold.  After it dries, tuck in the ends into the beads and trim the ends off.

Jayda was so pleased with how the bracelets turned out, she couldn't wait to give her dad his! He promptly began wearing it, just like he did the braided bracelet she made him in the past and the leather one her brother made for him.  He will soon have an armful of his kids creations to wear! He doesn't mind a bit!

Whose eye color would you like to wear?  I love the idea of this parent child version.  You could even do parent and multiple children for the Dad or Mom, and then have each child blended with their parent.  Father's Day is coming!

What a lovely craft, and what a great way to commemorate a friendship! I like the idea of the eye colour beads as well. Thank you for sharing this tutorial at the Hearth and Soul Link Party; it's featured at the July edition of the party! Hope to see you there :-)
