Welcome to the party everyone! Have you ever been to or even heard of a Favorite Things Party? I have only read about them, (check out those 2 links), but the idea sounds pretty appealing to me. I mean, we all have things in our lives that we absolutely love to use, the shirt that is the most comfortable, the appliance we use everyday, the cosmetic that makes us feel beautiful, the book that spoke to us. Things like that. And, when I have something like that, I love to tell people about it so that they can enjoy that awesome thing as well. That is the idea behind a Favorite Things Party.
Most Favorite Things Parties are celebrated in person, where guests come together and share the things that are their favorites with the other guests and everyone gets to take home either one of each of everyone else's favorite thing, or at least one of the favorite things. The Host can provide a gift bag to hold everything and specify a price limit so that guests can bring enough gifts for each of the 4-5 people invited, or the party can be a little larger and run like a white elephant exchange where you don't know exactly what you will be getting because everyone just brings one item. But, it will be something that someone highly recommends. Then, there are refreshments and chatting and just a lot of fun together with a small group of friends.
Well, since today marks Friday Faves #90 we thought it would be fun to have an online Favorite Things Party with all of you! Every Friday we tell you some of our favorite things that fall under various categories. This week we are turning it into a party! We would like you to tell us 1 or 2 of YOUR favorite things, in any family friendly category that you would like and think that we would love also. Give us a link to it! If it is an affiliate link for you, that is great! We will be pinning this party for everyone to see and definitely checking out your links to see if we want to make some of your favorite things become our favorites as well. As a matter of fact, next week I will feature some of the things that you share that catch my eye. So, leave pictures and I will use them and link them to you if you are a blogger. (By participating, you are giving me permission to use your photos on my blog to promote you and your favorite thing!)
I thought about doing this party as a linky party, but I want my readers who aren't bloggers to have an easy time participating, so we are using the comments section for your links. So, go ahead, what are a couple of your favorite things right now? I know! It is hard to chose just 2 things, but if this party turns out to be a success, we will do it again when we hit the Friday Faves 100 mark!
Helen's Favorite Things
This was a hard decision! Well, #1 was easy, but #2, I was torn between a few things. But, I won't break my own rule. I am only sharing 2 things... this time! Just click the image to go to the link.
Two years ago, my family got together and bought me my Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer! I love this thing. It has changed my life when it comes to baking. Things seem to mix up so much more quickly. It is so powerful. It is beautiful and looks great on my counter where it resides constantly! I always wanted one, but I was unprepared for how wonderful it really is to have it!
The next favorite thing is less expensive and I think it was either Maddy or Alicia who recommended it to me. It is Full and Soft Mascara by Maybelline. I have tried other mascaras in between using this one, but I always end up going back to Full and Soft. I love the wand size, the way it covers and the look of my eyes when I use it.
Now, go ahead! Head on down to the comments and add YOUR favorite thing! The party will be open all weekend! I can't wait to see what you love!

This recipe may be too late for the Super Bowl, but if you are like me, chips and guac are good any time! I like to make my own guacamole because a lot of the time, it is too spicy for me and my husband and if I make it myself, I can control the heat. This time this recipe came together so well, I had to share it.
Here in Phoenix, we often get boxes of produce from a local family run produce distribution company. There are a few of these available in the Valley of the Sun and this one has a distribution site very close to Lindsey's house. This past week, they offered a Super Bowl special that had all of the fixings for salsa and or guacamole. LIndsey and I split a box. The avocados included were beautiful and I absolutely had to make some guacamole out of some of them. There were a variety of peppers included in the box, but I knew they would spice things up too much, so I stuck with the sweet, colorful, mini peppers that I already had and gave the hotter peppers away. If you want your guac to be a little hotter, you can change out the type and amount of peppers.

This week I offer to you a nonfiction book to read: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi.
When Breath Becomes Air was published in 2016 and quickly became a New York Times #1 best seller as well as a Pulitzer Prize finalist. And let me tell you those honors are well deserved. Dr. Paul Kalanithi was a neurosurgeon who was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was young, he didn't smoke or live around those who did. He was 36. It was a very rare diagnosis. As he states in the book, "One has a very different relationship with statistics when one becomes one". Despite being written by a doctor, the book isn't clinical or strictly scientific. There's science in it yes, but it's more about his switch from doctor to patient and all the emotions that come with it. He talks about how people rallied around him. The ups and downs of his disease. But he also shares how amidst all this, he tries to live normally. He tells of the birth of his daughter, spending time with family, and even the struggle of working. It's hard to find words to describe the book because it's such a thought provoking and beautifully written work. It leaves you pondering about life. The feeling you get from reading Dr Kalanthi's work won't leave you. I read this book two years ago and it is still one of my go to nonfiction recommendations. Even though it deals with serious and heavy subjects, the book still left me hopeful. I know it's a book that I will pick up again and again. This book will make you cry. Especially the epilogue by Lucy, his wife. Although Paul died, Lucy says, "… [W]e knew that one trick to managing a terminal illness is to be deeply in love-to be vulnerable, kind, generous, grateful." "I expected to feel only empty and heartbroken after Paul died. It never occurred to me that you could love someone the same way after he was gone, that I would continue to feel such love and gratitude alongside the terrible sorrow, the grief so heavy that at times I shiver and moan under the weight of it." I wholeheartedly recommend this book to you. It's not a fast paced thriller or romantic comedy. But a thoughtful and beautiful book. It's short and impactful. I love it!

Hello readers! Do any of you have an Air Fryer? My mother in law gave us one for Christmas, and we have been Air Frying everything ever since!
PH and I love our cooking appliances. We are a gadety kitchen. This is a GREAT gadget and let me tell you why. 1. It cooks everything really fast. 2. It doesn't heat up your kitchen during those hot summer months. 3. The meat always turns out moist and juicy. No regrets you guys. If you get an Air Fryer, your life will change!
Last night we had family over for dinner for our monthly Family Home evening. We were hosting. I made my mom's amazing gluten free brownies for dessert since PH is a Valentine's baby and he loves brownies. And we made these delicious pork chops using the air fryer!
Now I will give the caveat that we had particularly thick cuts of meat so we had to cook our chops for a bit longer than the recipe calls for. If you have really thick chops like we did, add an extra five minutes to the cooking time to ensure they cook all the way through. Seriously guys. These air fryer pork chops are so good! Try them for dinner tonight, and enjoy! |
